Workforce Development
What is Workforce Development?
‘Workforce Development is the education, training and development for paid and unpaid staff. Developing skills to ensure that all staff have the relevant ability and confidence to carry out their roles effectively (Skills Active, 2005).
There are acronyms and terminology:
Training Needs Analysis - used to find out what training is needed.
Organisational Needs Analysis - used to find out what extra staff or volunteers are needed.
Skills Gap - this means training is needed in a specific skill e.g. IT Skills
Shortage - more staff or volunteers are needed e.g. coaches
Building Capacity - increasing the workforce size and improving the level of skill
The CSP is the strategic county lead for Sports Workforce Development, responsible for both the paid and voluntary workforce. Our role is to collate the needs of the workforce, assimilate this into a county plan, use the plan to access funding via Sport England and the Regional Sports Board and then (most importantly) direct this funding to the clubs and organisations that need it.
Sussex is supported by agencies such as the National Skills Academy, Learning and Skills Council, Skills Active, and the county HE and FE institutions. In a nutshell, we are responsible for ensuring that the Sussex sports workforce has the skills and capacity to meet the challenge of London 2012 and beyond keeping all the links that are there.
