Get Active!
Getting enough active minutes in the day is something we all find challenging in the fast-paced society that we live in. Just 22% of people in Sussex meet the grade! That means only 1 in 5 of us is active enough!
The recommendations about how much physical activity and sport to do to benefit your health are different for adults and children:
Adults should aim to do 5 x 30 minutes a week of moderate intensity sport and physical activity
Children should aim to include 60 active minutes in every day.
Don’t be put off!
People can be very creative when it comes to avoiding activity! But a lack of facilities, time, cost, or even just feeling too tired can all be potential barriers. Being physically active regularly is essential for health at any age, but can, and should be fun. To stay healthy, try and build up to half an hour of moderate physical activity on five or more days of the week. There are also some fantastic benefits of getting just a little bit more active:
- Extra energy!
- Improved concentration
- Better sleep
- Stress-reducer
- Anxiety-buster
- Health booster (including reduced risk of heart disease and some cancers)
- Better body image
- Sense of achievement/Self Esteem
- Super social-whirl
- Family friendly
Encourage your family, friends and colleagues to join you - being active is much more fun with friends or family, and they’ll thank you for it when you’re more energised and cheerful!
Improved health
Being more physically active can also help to prevent or manage health issues including:
- Weight control
- Blood pressure
- Cholesterol
- Heart disease
- Strokes
- Depression
- Osteoporosis
- Type 2 Diabetes
- Some cancers
If you are convinced that getting active is something you want to get involved with, there are loads of options for how you do it! It could be anything from walking, to belly-dancing, cheer-leading or going for a bike ride - there is something out there to suit everyone! And Sussex Sport will help you along the way!
