Sussex Parallel Youth Games
The Sussex County Sports Partnership annually organise the Sussex Parallel Youth Games in partnership with the Cooperative Group. The event is also supported by Mid Sussex District Council who provide Olympos, Leisure Centre very generously free of charge.
Without the support of the Cooperative Group and Mid Sussex District Council this event would not be able to take place. Over the last four years the event has doubled in size. In 2009 there were over 350 children from 19 special schools across the county battling for glory at the Games!
The Sussex Parallel Youth Games offers young disabled athletes the opportunity to show off their skills and receive much-deserved recognition in sport in Sussex. The children compete in a number of sports including boccia, wheelchair basketball, basketball, new age kurling, tennis, cricket and swimming and it is hoped that these Games provide a springboard for local aspiring athletes.
In 2009 there were over 80 volunteers at the event, who provided invaluable support and assistance to the sports and running of the day. Young sports leaders from Imberhorne School, St Paul’s Catholic College and Chichester College volunteered on the day alongside students from Oathall Community College. We also had staff from American Express, Rix and Kay, EDF and The Coopertive Group as part of the corporate volunteering programme.
We are delighted to announced the 2010 Sussex Parallel Youth Games will be held on Wednesday 9 June 2010 at Olympos, Burgess Hill.
Nigel Sweet, Cooperative Group Member who volunteered at the 2009 Games and said,
”This year’s Parallel Youth Games was a superb event. It was a pleasure to represent the Co-op Group at the Games and see first-hand the energy, enthusiasm and tenacity that these young contestants showed. The Co-op Group is proud of its long-term sponsorship and partnership with Sussex Parallel Games”.
Jessica Cook, SE Regional Development Manager from English Federation of Disability Sport said,
“Events like the Sussex Parallel Youth Games are so important to new and aspiring athletes. Many young people here today will be competing against others for the first time, and this could be the inspiration they need to be heading towards regional, national or even international competition in the future.”
