Over the last seven years, the Hockey Development Officer positions have been government funded through the Active Sports programme and were employed directly through County Sports Partnerships.
This year, the funding will cease to exist and therefore England Hockey took a pro-active approach to ensure a minimum level of service in all of the counties. As a result, 12 Development Officer positions have been created.
Hockey is the only sport to have taken this route with other sports of a similar size to hockey ending up in a position where they still have some part time staff, but it is hit and miss from county to county and therefore harder for them to provide a consistent service.
It is a demonstration of England Hockey’s commitment to the grass roots development of the sport that 300k has been committed to employ these people on a permanent basis. These appointments mean that 50% of England Hockey’s staff are now based in a development role, servicing the grass roots of the sport.
