StreetGames is the only national charity dedicated to developing sport in disadvantaged communities and our goal is to make sport accessible to everyone regardless of their income and social circumstances. As a Sport England partner, we champion ‘doorstep sport’, by which we mean positive activities delivered close to home, at the right time, at the right place and in the right style.

The StreetGames National Conference 2010 is an opportunity for StreetGames projects and those interested in the StreetGames doorstep sport approach to network with likeminded partners and participate in a series of innovative and practical workshops.

Presenting at the StreetGames National Conference 2010 will be:

Representatives from StreetGames, Sport England, London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG), National Governing Bodies of Sport, specialist training providers, StreetGames Young Volunteers, project managers and delivery staff. The conference promises to be a unique opportunity to hear the opinions of people involved in sport from policy to practice.

The Sussex Golf Partnership launched the initiative to develop a countywide coaching programme aimed at identifying and encouraging talented junior golfers. Funds have been provided to support this initiative through the England Golf Partnership and Sport England.

The ‘Try Out’ days were aimed at boys and girls aged 9 - 15, who have talent and interest but who are not part of the present County squad coaching programme. Each day followed the same pattern, with a two hour session of coaching and assessment run by County appointed coaches. The sessions were split into a number of components - long game, short game, chipping and putting.
 
The warm, bright weather matched the cheery mood as an assortment of Sussex golfers showcased their talents. The youngster ranged from beginners to regular players.

 
Connor Johnson, aged 11, felt the day was a great success: ‘I play every Saturday at Worthing Golf Club but today has been great to get out and meet new friends who all enjoy my favourite sport!’.

Petrina Marsh, aged 10, said: ‘Today I have learnt lots of new skills, my favourite part was when the coaches taught me how to chip!’.
 
One of the young golfer’s dads, Andrew Taylor, enthused: ‘It’s the first time my son has been to one of these sessions and it certainly won’t be the last…golf has the advantage of getting children active for longer, my son will make his way round an 18-hole golf course walking for over 4 hours - football would only get him active for 90 minutes!’
 
Neil Plimmer, PGA Fellow Professional said: ‘The response for the ‘Try-Out’ days surprised us all. It clearly shows there is a need for this type of initiative in our sport. All the academy coaches are really looking forward to working with the selected young people at each venue. I am also in the process of setting up other indicatives that will engage with the young people who did not get selected, watch this space!’.

Kerry Scott, Chairman of The Sussex Golf Partnership recognised: ‘It is important to focus on the youngsters in the game - they are the future of the game!’
 
Following the “Try Out” days - 96 children across the three sites have been selected to further their skills and receive coaching. This will provide the necessary support to enable the young golfers to attain their full potential and to have the opportunity to progress to the County Junior squads.

Crawley has been named as the official training site for athletes from Barbados in the run up to London 2012! The team will use the K2 leisure centre, which has an 50m swimming pool, running track and other facilities.

Crawley Borough Council said the town’s proximity to London had also helped attract the Barbados National Olympic squad to the venue.

West Sussex County Council leader Henry Smith said he believed their decision would boost the area’s economy.

Mr Smith said he hoped more teams would sign up to use the facilities on offer in the county and pledged that competitors would get “the right training, support and experience to qualify for the Games and to perform at their best in London”.

Crawley Councillor Lenny Walker said: “This is fantastic news for Crawley and the county…K2 Crawley is the jewel in the crown of the town’s leisure facilities and it’s extremely gratifying to get this kind of international approval.”

Useful Tips for entering events

• Event Title - make sure you include the type of activity e.g abseiling in Worthing / scuba diving in Margate, so that it will be picked up quickly by people using Google or similar search engines
• Description - Use the description to sell your activity/event - keep it short and to the point. Between 20 and 50 words is ideal. Start with the most important information so people know what to expect. 
• Clearly state what’s included e.g Fantastic opportunity to try: Abseiling, Canoeing, Climbing, Sailing Survival skills etc… 
• Cost - If the event isn’t free then make the cost recovery rate clear in the description of the activity on the database - e.g. Special ThrillSeeker activity taster £15 (normal rate £38) 
• Ongoing taster sessions

The tournament is designed to give as many young disabled athletes the chance to experience sport, increasing their self esteem and providing opportunity for development and progression.  Even if you have not had the chance to part in an even like this before, you are more than welcome and who knows what you may be able to achieve!
 

Athletes who attain qualifying times and distances at the meeting will be given the opportunity to represent the region at the Junior National Athletics Championships which is held at the Blackpool Athletics Arena. The event is also in need of volunteers to help run the event on the day - so if you would like to help out make sure you get in touch!

In a closely fought match Burgess Hill were 1-0 up at half time after a goal was scored by Grace Paterson. With the benefit of playing slightly down hill in the second half, Burgess Hill increased their lead with Georgina Nathan slotting the ball into the back of the net.  Southdown pushed hard to score and had a number of opportunities, but the win was secured when Georgina Grafin-Kerssenbrock ‘nutmegged’ the goal keeper.
