First prize for this prestigious award is £6,000.  Two second prizes of £3,000 and three third prizes of £1,000 are also up for grabs.  Last year’s prizes were awarded by Minister for Sport, Gerry Sutcliffe, and England Rugby World Cup winner Jason Leonard OBE at a glittering gala dinner in a top London hotel. In addition to the prize money, the governing body and winning club may benefit from local and national media attention.

The Big Challenge competition is closing to applications on January 12^th 2009!!

The Big Challenge competition is only open for one more week to any 16-25 year old who has a big idea for a project or campaign that helps other young people lead more positive and healthy lives. There is £60 000 to be won for a number of inspiring project ideas that will make a real difference to young people’s lives. Winners will have their project costs paid for along with support and mentoring to carry out their ideas.

• Drugs, sex and alcohol
• Sustainable living
• Gang culture
• Healthy living

46 sports, including all 2012 Olympic and Paralympic sports, have been awarded funding on the basis of their ability to increase the number of people playing and enjoying sport, and to create development pathways for those with talent.

14 sports, including fencing, handball, wheelchair basketball and taekwondo are receiving funding to develop their grassroots for the first time.

The overall amount invested directly into national governing bodies has increased from the 2005-09 allocation, and been brought into a single award for each sport. Responsibility for delivery has been placed in the hands of each governing body, with clear targets agreed on a sport-by-sport basis.

The investment decisions follow a rigorous assessment and a four-month period of engagement with the sports focused on achieving the ‘grow, sustain and excel’ outcomes at the heart of Sport England’s strategy. This has ensured that the right funding is being invested in the right places.

The 46 sports receiving funding were invited to submit detailed four-year plans setting out the contribution they could make to Sport England’s strategic outcomes. Sport England provided expertise in the development of these plans to ensure that they were clear, evidence-based and achievable.

 ‘Encouraging more young people to get involved in sports leadership and volunteering’

Step into Sport forms part of the Governments Physical Education and Sports Strategy for Young People (PESSYP). Launched on 1 April 2008, Leadership and Volunteering is one of the PESSYP strategy’s ten work strands, supporting targets to get more young people involved in leadership and volunteering.

Step into Sport is central to this, its overall aim being to increase the quantity, quality and diversity of young people engaged in leadership and volunteering, with consequent benefits to schools, clubs, the community and the young people themselves.

As part of the Step into Sport programme each School Sport Partnership is responsible for running a Leadership Academy, which is a programme of sports and leadership training offered to selected students aged 14-19. The Leadership Academies provide high quality support and development for young leaders and volunteers, offering a range of sport specific qualifications, generic leadership training, and other developmental workshops.  

 
On the 15 and 17 December 2008, the East Sussex School Sport Partnerships will be running their Leadership Academies with the support of the Sussex County Sports Partnership. The University of Sussex will be hosting these academy days which will run from 9:30am - 4:30pm. The programme for the two days includes multi skills coaching, disability and inclusive sport, first aid plus a series of sports specific sessions. We are delighted to announce that Sport England Sporting Champions are supporting these two events with Clare Strange, top British wheelchair basketball player and Donna Fraser, GB Team 200m and 400m runner in attendance.

Headline results from Active People Survey 2 will be released on 11 December 2008. The Active People Survey provides the largest sample size ever established for a sport and recreation survey and allows levels of detailed analysis previously unavailable. It helps establish a strong understanding of participation in sport and active recreation - nationally, regionally and locally.

Due to the overwhelming success of the Active People Survey 1 the survey has been repeated. In line with Active People Survey 1, interviewing for the Active People Survey 2 started on 15 October 2007 and was completed on 14 October 2008.

Dawn Primarolo, Minister of State for Public Health, has announced that the Department of Health will be making a financial contribution to support County Sport Partnerships to deliver on the physical activity agenda.

The announcement was made on 27 November 2008 at the FIA’s 4^th Annual Summit “Delivering a Healthier Britain”. The Minister also announced the support of the Department of Health for the National Physical Activity Alliance.

Andrew Lansley MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Health, also confirmed that the Conservative Party will continue much of the current work in the field of public health, specifically Change4Life. For more information please click here.

On 26^th November 2008, Crawley School Sport Partnership organised the Crawley Primary Schools Badminton Competition at K2. Thirteen teams from ten different primary schools entered the skills based badminton event held in K2 main hall.

After an enduring warm up session the competition got underway. The courts were divided up to make a circuit of fun activities and were expertly run by Young Sports Leaders from Thomas Bennett Community College. The circuits included relays, target practice and skills related to help the children improve their badminton.

A fabulous two hours of sport was had by all and the teams gathered together for the results. Presentations were made by Sports Leaders Tessa Stokes from Thomas Bennett and Tom Blandford from Holy Trinity. The winning team was Gossops Green A who were awarded a certificate, goodies from Badminton England and the Crawley Schools Badminton Trophy.

A massive thank you to all the students who participated, teachers who accompanied them, the Young Leaders, Crawley School Sport Partnership and anyone else who was involved.

On Wednesday 3 December 2008, Hove Town Hall will host the Sussex Sport and Health Network.

Starting at 9:00am the day will educate all partners with a the latest SCSPT Strategic and Information Update.

Followed by two Partner Update Presentations, the first will inform delegates on Active Healthy Workplaces lead by Sussex CSP Active Healthy Workplace Officer, Donna Imrie. The second will explain how to Develop Sports Leaders in Sussex lead by the Regional Development Manager - Sports Leaders UK, Fay Granville.

Delegates will then attend two workshops:
i) Sussex Games Past and Present - lessons learned from previous years and proposal for 2009 and beyond. 
ii) Workforce Development - options for yourself and your networks.

The Sussex Sport and Health Network will then close with a Networking Lunch from 12:45am onwards. We then invite delegates to either depart or remain at Hove Town Hall for the International Day of Disabled Persons, see www.bhfederation.org.uk and click ‘News’ for more information.
