Sussex Sports Awards 2008

A Host of Sporting Heroes Celebrate at the 2008 Sussex Sports Awards!

The Sussex Sports Awards is one of the most important events in the county’s sporting calender and aims to recognise outstanding achievements and contributions to sport across Sussex.

Held at the glittering venue, the Hilton Brighton Metropole and organised by the Sussex County Sports Partnership - the Sussex Sports Awards forms part of an overall strategy to deliver against government targets to increase participation in sport by 1% every year.

For the very first time the Awards opened up two of the major categories to the public vote, the Sussex Sports Personality and Young Sports Personality of the Year Award! We received over 1700 votes in total!!

The evening was hosted by former Sussex County Cricket Club Captain, Chris Adams and Juice 107.2 FM’s Saturday Sports presenter, Tony Marks. We were also joined by a number of Olympic and Paralympic champions including:

Ben Hawes - GB Hockey Team Captain
David Stone - Paralympic Cyclist
Ben Quilter - Paralympic Judo
Olly Freeman - Olympic Triathlete
Richard Schabel - Paralympic Athlete, Discus
Nyree Lewis - Paralympic Swimmer
Sascha Kindred - Paralympic Swimmer
Richard Leman - Olympic Gold Medalist 1988 Seoul

A fundraising raffle was held on the night and raised exactly £1304 for the St Peter & St James Hospice in Chailey, East Sussex, in memory of Jim Thompson who dedicated his life to community football and who sadly lost his battle with cancer earlier this year.
